What a dandy! Originally, typewriter manufacturers attempted to achieve the much-desired "noiseless" state by using various methods of muffling the sound -- with covers over the mechanism or with weighted plates to reduce vibration. Eventually it was in modifying the action of the type bars to stop precisely at the platen, which accomplished the best sound reduction. This innovation by C.C. Colby of Quebec, and one of the most prolific of typewriter inventors, Wellington P. Kidder, was sold to Remington for the manufacture of the first noiseless machines. The Underwood Noiseless, very similar to the Remington machines, was produced in the 1920s after Remington and Underwood exchanged patents.
